Privacy policy
StreetTeller is an app that plays short stories about the places you pass on a London bus. It is currently being tested by a small group of riders before release. This policy explains what the app and this website collect, why, and for how long.
- The app records your route and the stories it plays only while a journey is running, and sends that record to us.
- It's linked to a random code for your phone, not to your name. There are no accounts.
- We use it only to fix problems and improve when stories play, and delete it after 90 days.
- No advertising, no tracking across apps, and we never sell or share your data.
Who we are
StreetTeller is run by Amit Sharon, who is responsible for your data (the "controller" under UK data protection law). Contact: hello@streetteller.com.
What the app collects
A record of each journey. From the moment you tap Start until the journey ends, the app records:
- your phone's location every few seconds, with its accuracy and speed;
- which stories were triggered and played, and when;
- what happened in the app, such as which screens you opened, whether permissions were allowed, and any errors.
The app also records app events when no journey is running, such as downloading a route, but never your location. It doesn't use your location outside a journey, and it never asks for location "Always".
Feedback and problem reports. If you send feedback, we receive your rating and anything you write. If you report a problem with a story, we receive the reason you chose, anything you write, which story it was, and your location at that moment, so we can see where it went wrong.
A random code for your phone. The app creates a random code the first time it opens, and sends it with everything above, so we can see which journeys and feedback came from the same phone. It isn't linked to your name, your phone number or your phone's own identifiers. The app's About screen shows the start of it as your "tester code". Deleting the app removes it; reinstalling makes a new one.
What we don't collect: your name, email address, contacts, photos, advertising identifier or any account details. The app has no accounts and no advertising.
When it's sent
The journey record is sent while a journey is running, about every 10 minutes, and when it ends. Anything that couldn't be sent, for example with no signal, waits on your phone and is sent the next time you open the app. Feedback and problem reports are sent straight away, or later if there's no signal.
Why we use it
Only to run this test well: to find out what went wrong on a ride, fix problems, and improve when stories play, for example by adjusting where along the route each one starts. We don't use it for advertising or to build a profile of you.
Under UK data protection law, we rely on our legitimate interest in testing and improving the app. Taking part in the test is voluntary, and sending this data is part of taking part. If you don't want it sent, please don't start a journey, and ask us to delete anything already sent.
Who else handles it
- Cloudflare stores the journey records, feedback and reports for us, in Western Europe, and serves the app's content and this website. Like any network service, Cloudflare sees your phone's IP address when the app connects; we don't store it with your data.
- Apple and Google: if you install the test through TestFlight or Google Play, they handle that under their own privacy policies, and may share crash reports and any feedback you send through them with us.
We don't sell or share your data with anyone else.
How long we keep it
- Journey records, feedback and problem reports are deleted automatically 90 days after they reach us.
- On your phone, the app deletes its records after 30 days. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your phone.
- If you email us, we keep the conversation for as long as we need it to reply and follow up.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it. Email hello@streetteller.com with your tester code (in the app, under About), so we can find your data. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
The test is for adults. If a child uses the app on a parent's phone, for example on a family trip, the app records the same as on any journey: linked to the phone, not to the child, with no names. If you'd like it deleted, email us with the tester code.
This website
streetteller.com uses no cookies, no analytics and no tracking. Cloudflare, which hosts it, sees your IP address to deliver the pages.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. Before the app starts collecting a new kind of data, uses it for a new purpose, shares it with anyone new, or keeps it for longer, we'll tell testers first.
